The Greens have welcomed news that the Labor Government are now consulting on new laws to make it easier to rent with pets, just days after they blocked amendments that would have provided a presumption in favour of pet friendly rentals.
“On Tuesday the Greens moved a range of amendments to the Government’s Residential Tenancies Act, including legislating for a presumption in favour of renting with pets. These amendments were opposed by Labor, yet 5 days later Labor say they will now consult on their own bill,” said Greens SA Housing Spokesperson Robert Simms MLC.
“The Greens welcome this change of heart from Labor in response to growing pressure but urge them to abandon yet another consultation and fast track the changes through Parliament.”
“There’s been months of consultation and review already, renters need real action now. Labor must also move on rent capping and scrapping no cause evictions to give relief and protection to tenants who are at the mercy of the market.”
“The SA rental market is a nightmare. It needs urgent reform, not piecemeal announcements,” said Robert Simms.
