Greens call for more social and affordable housing at the West End Brewery site

25 September 2023

The Greens have welcomed news that the SA Government has acquired the West End Brewery site for a housing development but say there should be more social and affordable housing as part of the build.

“South Australia is in the middle of a full-blown housing crisis. It’s clear that we urgently need more affordable and social housing in our state”, said Greens SA Housing Spokesperson Robert Simms MLC.

“The Government’s announcement that only 20 per cent of the homes built at the West End Brewery site will be social and affordable housing simply doesn’t go far enough when there are over 15,000 on South Australia’s public housing waiting list. The Government must ensure that at least 50 per cent of the homes are social and affordable housing to significantly boost supply.”

Last month Mr Simms introduced a bill into the Upper House which would require developers to double the number of affordable and public houses they are currently required to build in all new major developments in SA.
