Greens warn Uni merge plan could threaten SA jobs

7 April 2022

Merging some of SA’s universities could result in job losses and adversely impact on the student experience, warn the Greens.

“Rather than investigating mergers, Premier Malinauskas should be considering a support package for the state’s ailing University sector,” said SA Greens Higher Education Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“The University sector is one of SA’s biggest employers. It’s been hard hit by covid. The story of Uni mergers around the world is that they often result in job cuts in the name of ‘efficiencies’. These ‘efficiencies’ can also mean a reduction in student satisfaction. The last thing SA universities need at the moment is more uncertainty.”

“Mergers shouldn’t be on the agenda for the new Government, particularly as our state continues to grapple with a jobs crisis.”
