Action on rent bidding welcome but more changes to the Residential Tenancies Act are needed

15 February 2023

The Government’s announcement that it will be banning rent bidding is welcome but more changes to the Residential Tenancies Act are needed to address the state’s rental crisis, say the Greens.

“Banning rent bidding is a welcome reform that would bring SA onto line with many other states, but the government needs to do more to get our rental market under control,” said SA Greens Housing Spokesperson Robert Simms MLC.

“Given prices continue to skyrocket, the Government needs to implement rent controls as an urgent priority. We also need to end no cause evictions and legislate to make it easier to rent with pets.”

“South Australian renters have some of the weakest protections in the country, so rent bidding is sadly just one piece of an unfair system that’s stacked against renters. I look forward to seeing the full suite of the reforms."

The Greens will examine the detail of any government bill to ensure that it meets the needs of tenants and move to strengthen the bill through amendments if required.
