The State’s Upper House has today backed a Greens motion calling on the Malinauskas Government to trial 50-cent fares across the public transport network in their upcoming budget, following the success of a similar scheme in Queensland.
The motion, moved by Greens SA Transport Spokesperson Robert Simms MLC, passed the Legislative Council this afternoon with the support of the Liberal Opposition and the crossbench.
Last month, Adelaide City Council called on the Malinauskas Government to implement a trial of 50-cent fares in SA.
“The Upper House has sent a clear message to the Malinauskas Government that South Australians want cheaper and more accessible public transport,” said Mr Simms.
“The Queensland trial saw public transport patronage jump by 18% and saved regular commuters thousands of dollars. It’s time for South Australia to follow suit.”
“The Greens estimate a family of four using public transport on weekdays could save over $1,700 during a 6-month trial. That’s significant relief at a time when so many households are struggling in a cost of living crisis.”
“Affordable public transport reduces congestion, cuts carbon emissions, and eases financial pressure on families. With both the Upper House and the Adelaide City Council now on board with a trial, momentum is building to slash fares, and the ball is in the Premier’s court.”
