The SA Greens renew calls for a rent freeze

9 July 2026

The South Australian Greens have renewed calls for a rent freeze with Adelaide house rentals at a new record high.

With the median house rental price now $650 a week, up from $620 at this time last year, SA Greens leader Robert Simms says too many households are just one rent increase away from eviction or homelessness.

“Adelaide house rental prices are now more expensive than Melbourne. Rents are skyrocketing out on control while the Malinauskas Government continues to sit on its hands."

"We’ll be moving for a two-year rent freeze when Parliament resumes after the winter break to give people the security they need in this cost-of-living crisis.”

“People are already experiencing financial stress, struggling to make ends meet. This sensible, immediate cost-of-living rent relief will support people with the least secure housing.”

"Under the Greens Private Members Bill rents would be frozen for a two-year period with any future increases capped in line with inflation"
