Skyscrapers alone won’t solve housing crisis say Greens

27 October 2025

The Greens say skyscrapers alone won’t be enough to solve the housing crisis gripping the state, as Labor announces changes to planning laws to lift height restrictions and a $500m fund to guarantee apartment developments.

“Instead of tinkering with height limits and watering down planning rules to remove the requirements for private balconies, kitchens, and even bathrooms, the Malinauskas Government should looking at ways to increase the supply of affordable housing across Adelaide,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“This week I will be bringing to a vote in the Upper House my bill to require all new residential developments of more than 20 dwellings to include 30 per cent social housing: 10 per cent public housing, 10 per cent affordable to buy, 10 per cent affordable to rent.”

“If the Government really is serious about tackling the housing crisis head-on, then they will back that common-sense proposal to expand the supply of affordable housing in new developments.”

“Additionally, the Government should be stepping up and actually building more public housing. Last week, the Greens announced our plan to build 20,000 public homes and restore the Housing Trust’s mission as a public builder. We need Labor to come on board with a commitment to build more public housing.”
