SA Greens join Adelaide City Council call for 50 cent fares

12 March 2025

The SA Greens have joined the Adelaide City Council in calling for the State Government to trial 50 cent public transport fares.

In September last year, the Greens first called for the SA Government to adopt a six month trial of the scheme, following its success in Queensland. Last night, Adelaide City Council passed a resolution also calling on the Government to adopt the plan.

“It’s clear that momentum is continuing to build to slash public transport fares, and the Greens welcome the City Council joining us in advocating for this sensible policy,” said Greens SA Transport Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“More South Australians are struggling to make ends meet than ever before and our State Government needs to step up and provide relief to households. While transport costs are being slashed interstate, the Malinauskas Government actually hiked up MetroCard single fares by 15 cents to $4.40 in its last budget. That’s a slap in the face to commuters who are seeking to make green choices.”

“The SA Greens believe that public transport should be free and have been calling for this for some time, but at the very least the State Government should follow the example of Queensland by making public transport cheap for all commuters. A 6-month trial would be a good way to gauge community uptake for such a scheme.”

“We estimate a family of four that uses public transport every weekday, could save more than $1,700 over a 6 month trial period. That’s welcome relief for families that are doing it tough during this cost of living crisis.”
