Renters Get Reprieve From Evictions Until September

13 May 2021

Following pressure from the Greens, the Treasurer has given a commitment to the parliament that the provisions protecting renters from eviction and rent increases will be extended until September.

Greens MLC, Robert Simms moved to extend the protections until May next year, but this was defeated by Labor, the Liberals and SA Best.

“This extension of the moratorium by 4 months is a welcome reprieve for renters, however it means they will face more insecurity in the months ahead,” Greens MLC Robert Simms said.

“The 12-month extension advocated by the Greens would have provided more certainty to those in fear of eviction, but we welcome the commitment made by the government today for an additional 4 months. We will continue to advocate for measures to protect renters and those experiencing financial disadvantage during this economic crisis.
