Park Lands tragedy highlights urgent need for action on poverty and homelessness

22 July 2022

The Greens have renewed their calls for the Malinauskas Government to take urgent action on growing poverty and homelessness, following the tragic death of a woman sleeping rough in the Adelaide Park Lands.

“This tragic death is another reminder of the inequality crisis that’s gripping our state,” said Greens Housing Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“We are seeing more and more South Australians being plunged into poverty and homelessness. We need urgent action from the State Government. This means increased investment in public housing, action on skyrocketing rent prices and better support for people in need.”

“Sadly, the full scale of this crisis is not known as the deaths of rough sleepers in our state are not being officially recorded. We need the Government to record this information and make it publicly available.”

Earlier this month, Mr Simms introduced a Private Members Bill to cap rent prices in South Australia. He also urged the Government to increase the Cost of Living Concession payment for renters.
