Greens Welcome SA Liberals' Change of Heart on Net Zero

20 June 2025

The Greens have welcomed the State Liberals’ support for stronger climate action following the passage of their Drought Response Coordinator Bill with Greens amendments in the Upper House yesterday evening.

The Liberals’ Drought Response and Recovery Coordinator Bill will allow for the declaration of a drought emergency and establish a Drought Response and Recovery Coordinator to oversee the response. Greens MLC Robert Simms moved amendments that ensure the bill aligns with SA’s target of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and also require the Coordinator to develop strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience.

“Droughts are becoming more frequent, more severe, and more prolonged due to climate change. These common-sense amendments will ensure that the Drought Coordinator’s work is guided by climate science, aligned with our state’s emissions reduction goals, and focused on building long-term climate resilience,” said Robert Simms.

“I welcome the State Liberals distancing themselves from the climate denialists that dominate their State Council like Alex Antic, who has made absurd, and alarmist claims that SA’s Net Zero target is dismantling our energy sector and driving up the cost of living.”

The Liberals' Private Members bill will need support of the Lower House before it becomes law.
