Greens welcome historic lifting of restrictions of gay and bisexual men donating plasma

15 July 2025

Greens MLC Robert Simms celebrated the lifting of restrictions on gay and bisexual men donating plasma in Australia by donating plasma for the first time in Adelaide yesterday.

“I was pleased and proud to be able to roll up my sleeves and give my first ever plasma donation yesterday,” said Mr Simms.

“It’s an easy, painless process so I encourage anyone who is in a position to donate to please do so.”

“I know so many LGBTI South Australians will welcome this opportunity to support our community by contributing to the plasma supply.”

As a result of the changes that came into effect yesterday, people who were previously prevented  from plasma donation, including gay and bisexual men, sex workers, people on PrEP, can now donate, provided they meet the standard eligibility criteria.
