The Greens have welcomed news that the Government will finally fulfill its election commitment to ban conversion practices in South Australia and say they will consider the details of any proposed reform to ensure it meets the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Quotes attributable to Greens SA LGBTQIA+ Spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC:
“The Greens have been campaigning to end conversion practices in SA for a long time. We will carefully examine the details of this proposed legislation and consult with community to make sure that this proposed legislation fulfils Labor's promise to LGBTIQ+ South Australians.
The LGBTIQ+ community and their allies are deeply concerned about the harmful and damaging conversation practices that are allowed to legally continue in our state. A 2021 survey of over 600 LGBTIQ+ South Australians found that 85 per cent of respondents rated ending conversion practices as extremely important. I’m sure that the community will welcome this announcement.”
Quotes attributable to Greens SA Attorney General Spokesperson Robert Simms MLC:
“As our state prepares to celebrate 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 2025, now is the time for us to consign conversion practices to the dustbin of history. Bans are already in place in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. Given South Australia’s tradition of gay law reform, it’s only right that we should join them.”
“As an out and proud gay man in state parliament, I know how important this reform is. Conversion practices do great harm. They should have no place in South Australia.”
