Greens welcome government backdown on garages bill

27 November 2025

The Greens welcome news that the Malinauskas Government will be abandoning its double garages bill after failing to secure a pathway for it to pass the Upper House without amendment today.

“This bill being parked is a win for the Greens, our environment and common sense. We’ve been steadfast in opposing this for months,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“This bill would have hiked up house prices, further entrenched car reliance, increased carbon emissions and compounded congestion. It would have made the housing and climate crises worse.”

“The Government says this bill will now become an election issue. Bring it on! I welcome the opportunity to focus on housing affordability and public transport during the election campaign. These are issues Labor has botched this term."

“The Greens will be campaigning for our bold public transport plan - 50 cent fares, extending the tramline, more reliable and frequent bus services and rail to the hills. These are things that will actually address congestion and make our suburbs and cities more liveable.”

"It's rare for all sides of politics to unite against a bill in this way. It demonstrates just how deeply flawed this proposal is. It's arrogant in the extreme for the government to think that the upper house would just waive through bad legislation."
