The Greens have welcomed news that the State Government has brokered a deal to save the Crown and Anchor but say they will keep fighting to fix the state’s broken planning system.
“This is a big win for people power. It's clear that community pressure works. The Greens have raised this matter at local Council, and in State and Federal Parliament. We are proud to have stood with the community at every step of the way and we welcome the Premier finally responding to this pressure and taking action," said Greens MLC Robert Simms.
"Developers in Adelaide will surely think again before targeting our iconic buildings. This enormous campaign has demonstrated that those who threaten Adelaide's iconic spaces, will face one hell of a fight!"
"In particular, the Greens welcome news that the Crown and Anchor will be protected by a dedicated act of parliament. We will consider the details of this proposal to ensure that it provides the protection needed."
“But this isn’t the end of this fight. In fact, it's just the beginning."
"The Crown and Anchor is the latest in a string of iconic buildings and live music venues that have been targeted by developers in our state. Our planning system puts the interests of developers above the community as a whole. The Cranker has been saved, but without reform other iconic pubs could still be in the firing line.”
“The next step must be for the Government to finally strengthen the role of the community in planning and give communities more of a say in planning the cities they want to live in. The Government need to beef up the social and cultural elements of heritage protection to ensure we keep Adelaide a vibrant and dynamic place."
"The Greens will continue this fight in the parliament."
