Greens urge Government to close Park Lands loophole

25 September 2024

Now that the police horses have formally moved to Gepps Cross, the Greens are urging the State Government to fast track a Greens bill through the Parliament that would prevent any future relocation of the barracks to the Park Lands.

“When the bill to establish the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital and raze the Police Barracks passed the Parliament in August 2022, the Police Minister was given new powers to seize any piece of the Park Lands they wish to accommodate a new barracks,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“In August last year, a Greens bill to strip the Police Minister of these extraordinary powers passed the Upper House. Now that a new home for the horses has been found, the Government should back this Greens bill in the Lower House.”

“Without this reform, Damocles Sword will continue to hang over the Park Lands. It’s time to close this loophole and for the government to make it clear that it doesn’t consider the Park Lands as a suitable site for the barracks in the future.”
