Greens Urge for Better Deal for Firefighters

12 August 2025

The Greens are urging the State Government to provide a better deal for SA’s firefighters as their union meets today to consider taking industrial action.

The United Firefighters Union has called on the Malinauskas Government to pay firefighters for the additional public holidays that the Government has legislated and agree to provisions that will guarantee that firefighters receive the minimum level of training they need to safely perform their duties.

“The State Government’s refusal to pay firefighters for public holidays and guaranteed minimum training is slap in the face to the people who put their lives on the line to keep our community safe,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“In just the last week we’ve seen SA Labor disrespect firefighters, fail ambulance employees on ramping, and oppose work from home for public sector workers. Labor is becoming increasingly out of touch with SA workers.”

“Given that the Government is willing to spend $45 million on redeveloping a golf course and more than $100 million on government advertising, it’s a bit rich for them to argue that they can’t afford to pay our firefighters what they are worth or provide the training that they need to safely perform their work.”

“The Greens stand in solidarity with SA’s firefighters. We support them in their struggle for better pay and work conditions.”
