Greens urge cost of living relief ahead of interest rate hike

7 March 2023

The Greens are calling for the SA Government to use some of their stamp-duty windfall and other revenue measures to provide urgent cost of living relief as families prepare for another interest rate hike later today.

“With interest rates and inflation soaring, now is the time for the Malinauskas Government to provide relief for struggling families – particularly given they’ve raked in more stamp-duty than expected,” said Greens Treasury Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“In addition to measures to help first home buyers, the Government should take real action on the cost of living crisis by scrapping all fees for public schools, improving rent and energy subsidies, making public transport free and rolling out free school breakfasts and lunches.”

“The Government should also be looking at options to tax the big banks who continue to make record profits during this economic crisis. A Big Bank Levy of the kind first proposed by Premier Jay Weatherill in 2017 would generate $340 million per year – money that could be used to provide urgent relief to South Australians who are experiencing financial pain.”
