Greens sound alarm over AI data centres

23 June 2026

The SA Greens warn new data centres could have an adverse impact on SA jobs and sap our state’s vital energy and water resources.

“Rather than rolling out the red carpet for AI centres, the Malinauskas Government should be slamming on the breaks,” said Greens SA Leader Robert Simms MLC.

“Data miners and big tech want to harvest our natural resources in order to make huge profits. We know that these centres have will have a huge impact on water and energy. And we need to be sure that South Australians aren’t forced to carry the can in terms of increased prices and diminished water supply and quality.”

“The Green are also concerned about the impact of these data centres on long term jobs. The Government says that these centres will create jobs during the construction phase, but how many jobs will be lost in the long term if we allow AI to continue to develop with so little regulation?”

“The Malinauskas Government has a poor track record when it comes to bending over backwards to accommodate big business and big developments. We will be closely examining the details of any proposed legislation associated with the Government’s strategy to make sure that it’s not imposing these centres on communities against their wishes.”
