Greens slam Police Barracks Park Lands site

12 March 2023

Building a new ‘Mounted Operations Unit’ for SAPOL on the Park Lands would represent another loss of the city’s green space and highlights the need for further protections, say the Greens.

“This is yet another erosion of our iconic Park Lands by the State Government,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“Sadly, the Government was given a blank check to acquire Park Lands for a new Police Barracks when the Greens’ amendments to the Hospital Bill were blocked last year.”

“The Government should reveal all plans for the new unit and any alternative sites that were in consideration. It’s hard to believe that the Park Lands are the only suitable location for such a facility, particularly given it will include offices and training areas.”

“This episode highlights the urgent need to add the Park Lands to the State Heritage List. At least that would add another layer of protection and oversight of developments such as this,” Mr Simms said.

The Greens bill to add the Park Lands and city plan to the State Heritage Register passed the Upper House last year but has been stalled by the Government.
