The Greens have slammed Premier Peter Malinauskas’ push to fast-track the stalled Narrabri gas project in NSW. The Australian today reported that the Premier will tell its ‘Energy Nation’ conference that bringing the gas field online is necessary to achieve net-zero goals and firm the grid.
Quotes attributable to Robert Simms, Greens MLC
“If the Premier is truly concerned about grid reliability, he should instead bring back the home battery scheme that his government axed shortly after coming to office in 2022 rather than bail out an interstate gas project.”
“If Adelaide is to be a contender to host CoP, the Premier needs to make a choice between a safe climate or propping up gas corporations.”
Quotes attributable to Melanie Selwood, Lead Upper House Candidate:
“The Climate Risk Report released last week warned of the devastating consequences that Australia will face if our leaders continue to prop up fossil fuels. It’s outrageous that the Premier is seeking to support an industry that puts our environment at risk when South Australia is experiencing a devastating algal bloom driven by a warming climate.”
“The NSW Planning Commission received more than 23,000 public submissions opposing the Narrabri Gas Project compared to only 300 in support. The Premier is prioritising the fossil fuel industry over the wishes of the community and the future of the environment and climate.”
