The Greens say a plan from the Malinauskas Government to pause public transport fare hikes for just 3 months is practically meaningless and will do nothing to tackle soaring fuel costs.
"This meagre offering is a slap in the face to South Australians struggling with the cost of fuel. The announcement is all spin and no substance," said Greens MLC Robert Simms.
"A regular MetroCard fare will now remain at $4.55 rather than increase to $4.70, saving commuters just 30c a day, a maximum of $18 total over the next 3 months. Big whoop!"
"This announcement is a total fizzer. It's time for the Government to provide meaningful relief and back the Greens plan for free public transport for the next 6 months, which would save a commuter up to $1000."
On the first sitting week after the election, the Greens introduced a Private Members Bill to make train, bus and rail transport free for a six-month period.
