Greens Slam Government’s Bigger Garages Push

24 November 2025

The SA Greens have slammed a Government bill that changes state planning laws to mandate bigger garages which is due to be debated in Parliament this week.

The Statutes Amendment (Vehicle Parking and Urban Renewal) Bill mandates a minimum number of car parks for new dwellings (one car park for one-bedroom homes and at least two for dwellings with two or more bedrooms) and increases dimensions for single vehicle parks to 3.5m wide by 6m and the size garage doors will be required to be at least 3m to accommodate larger vehicles.

“It’s absurd that in the middle of a climate crisis the State Government is looking to force developers to build bigger garages. All this will do is entrench South Australia’s reliance on car travel and drive up the cost of housing,” said Greens Transport Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“Rather than bigger garages, the State Government should be reducing public transport fares and boosting its investment in public transport and cycling infrastructure to offer real alternatives to car travel. “
