Greens Slam Golf Course Redevelopment Bill

27 June 2025

The Greens have slammed the Government’s bill to enable the redevelopment of the North Adelaide Golf Course to host the LIV Golf tournament, which passed the Upper House yesterday evening. The bill gives the Government the power to annex Park Lands without accountability.

The Greens successfully pushed for amendments to the bill that will prevent accommodation, like luxury hotels, from being built on the redevelopment site — but the door remains open for accommodation to be constructed on adjacent Park Lands. The Greens’ amendments to enhance protection for regulated trees and strengthen consultation requirements for the redevelopment were not supported by Labor.

“The process leading to this point has been shameful. The Government began by announcing in February that it already had the numbers to make a legislative change if it wanted to, then spent months evading repeated calls from the Greens to release the details of its plans to the public. The Government has bypassed the Adelaide City Council, which was negotiating in good faith, to ram this bill through Parliament. That’s not how our democracy should work,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“To add insult to injury, the Government has secret contracts with LIV Golf through the SATC and Greg Norman Designs but won’t reveal the terms. Surely the people of South Australia have the right to this information when we are talking about our public land and public money?”

“Every time that Governments decide to raid the Park Lands for their latest projects, we lose a unique part of our city that we can never get back.”

“This seizure by the Malinauskas Government is another reminder of the urgent need to add the Park Lands to the State Heritage List so that they finally receive the protection they deserve. The Greens will be campaigning on this in the coming state election.”
