The SA Greens yesterday secured amendments to the Government’s point-to-point levy on taxi and rideshare fares to secure long-term funding for disability access and public and active transport.
Under the amendment to the Government’s Passenger Transport (Point to Point Transport Services) Amendment Bill any funds raised by the levy will now only be spent on public and active transport as well as ongoing initiatives to buy back taxi licenses, assist people with disability to access transport services, and to measures to support regulation and administration of the passenger transport sector.
“Rather than this money simply disappearing into a budget black hole, funding will now be secured for public and active transport, disability access, as well the taxi buyback scheme. This is a big win for transparency and for active and public transport in SA”, said Greens Transport Spokesperson Robert Simms.
“This amendment locks in dedicated funding to support better public transport options, safer and more accessible infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, and improved accessibility to transport for people with disabilities. “
