Greens Presser, raising alarm over disclosure of private health information, backing investigation calls

10 March 2026

The Greens say they will push for a Human Rights Charter to protect personal health information in the next parliament and back calls for an investigation, following revelations that private patient emails had been leaked to the media by the Malinauskas Government.

“I am shocked and appalled that private health information has been weaponised in this way. Today we have heard new allegations that this has happened not once, but twice,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“Data relating to health is some of the most important and sensitive data held by any Government. This should not be released to the media to further the political interests of the Government of the day. There should be an independent investigation into this matter. We also need to examine whether or not this problem is widespread, across other Government agencies.”

“In addition, this highlights the need for further protections of individual privacy. South Australians should feel confident to contact their Government without fear of that correspondence being released.  In Victoria their Human Rights Charter gives all citizens a right to privacy and reputation. This includes Government departments and provides a protection for correspondence. A human rights charter was backed by the Social Development Committee back in 2024. This part of the platform the Greens are taking to this election and we will move to initiate a Human Rights Charter to provide these protections when Parliament resumes.”
