Greens Move for State Inquiry into Toxic Algal Bloom as PM Visits SA

20 August 2025

SA Greens MLC Robert Simms will today move to establish a joint parliamentary inquiry into the State Government’s response to the toxic algal bloom as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visits the state to inspect the coastline.

“For months the toxic algal bloom has engulfed South Australia’s shores, devastating our marine environment and inflicting a major toll on businesses, tourism and the wellbeing of those who live and work on our coasts. This is the biggest ecological disaster in our state’s modern history and the Parliament has a responsibility to investigate”, said Robert Simms.

“This inquiry will examine the causes of this crisis and the State Government’s response, including whether the current support and recovery arrangements are adequate. It will also consider the rehabilitation and recovery planning and the steps that may be taken to prevent a catastrophe like this from happening again in the future.”

“I urge all parties to back this inquiry so that we can work together to find solutions to this crisis.”
