Greens move for Malinauskas Government to trial 50 cent public transport fares

20 March 2025

The SA Greens moved a motion in the State’s Upper House yesterday afternoon calling on the Malinauskas Government to trial 50 cent fares across the public transport network, following the success of a similar trial in Queensland that has resulted in the scheme being made permanent.

The move comes after the Adelaide City Council last week resolved to call on the Malinauskas Government to implement a trial of 50-cent fares in SA.

“Momentum is building across the country to slash public transport fares to reduce congestion and ease cost of living,” said Greens SA Transport Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“The trial of 50 cent fares in Queensland saw a massive 18% jump in the number of people taking public transport compared to 2023 and has collectively saved regular commuters millions of dollars. The Greens estimate a family of four that uses public transport every weekday here in SA could save more than $1,700 under a similar trial. That would be welcome relief for families that are doing it tough during this cost of living crisis.”

“The SA Greens believe that public transport should be free and have been calling for this for some time, but at the very least the State Government should follow the example of Queensland by making public transport cheap for all commuters”, said Greens SA Transport Spokesperson Robert Simms.

“A 6-month trial of 50 cent fares would be a good way to gauge community uptake for such a scheme here in SA and provide relief to households doing it tough in this cost of living crisis.”
