Greens defend the right to access abortion

5 September 2025

The Greens have reiterated their strong opposition to moves to wind back abortion access in South Australia and have called on Labor and the Liberals to protect the right to access abortion in their party policy platforms to stop the women's rights being used as a political football ahead of next years’ state election.

Quotes attributable to Robert Simms MLC:

“I strongly support the right of all people to access reproductive healthcare.  Abortion is healthcare. This isn’t a matter of individual conscience for Greens MPs, it’s long standing Greens policy.  We will always defend the right to access abortion.  I will oppose the move from Sarah Game to reopen this debate and am bitterly disappointed that once again reproductive rights are being used by the far right for political gain. The Parliament dealt with this issue just last year, nothing has changed.  Sadly, this seems to be about trying to whip up division and make headlines ahead of next year’s state election. I urge all political parties in the parliament to join the Greens in opposing this destructive and divisive bill.”

Quotes attributable to Melanie Selwood, Legislative Council candidate:

"This shouldn't be a matter of conscience for the major parties - Labor and the Liberals need to adopt a firm position that the right to abortion should be protected.  Why is it that reproductive rights are a matter of conscience, when they require a binding vote on everything else? Reproductive rights should be non-negotiable. Vincent Tarzia and Peter Malinauskas need to show leadership and party unity on this issue.”

“Everyone deserves access to safe, affordable reproductive healthcare. The Greens will continue to take a strong stand for the right to abortion. Instead of starting a culture war, we should be working to address the real issues facing our state - the cost of living, the algal bloom and protecting our environment."
