Greens Call on State Government to Roll Out Bikeways as Fuel Crisis Bites

15 April 2026

The Greens are urging the Malinauskas Government to commit to opening pop-up bikeways and the cycling network as Adelaide City Council last night passed a motion for Council to investigate temporary bikeway infrastructure on key network routes to support fuel-free transportation during the ongoing fuel crisis.

The motion, moved by Councillor Eleanor Freeman, also calls for secure bicycle parking in strategic locations, e-bike charging facilities and an improved cycling network.

“With fuel supplies squeezed and prices through the roof, South Australians need alternatives to cars to get to work, school and the shops,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“Bikes are the fastest, cheapest option we can roll out right now and I urge the Malinauskas Government to roll out pop-up bike lanes during this fuel crisis and to finally commit to building an integrated cycling network our state needs.”

“Temporary bikeways can be created in weeks, not years. Other cities did this during the pandemic, and it worked. There’s no reason Adelaide can’t do the same while the fuel crisis continues.”

The Greens announced a series of initiatives ahead of the March state election to improve active transport, including:

  • Establishing an Active Transport Commissioner
  • Investing $100 million over 4 years in cycle and walking paths, including a cycle trail in the Adelaide Hills
  • Mandating that a safe and accessible fully separated cycle and walking path be included in all new major road projects
  • Including bike lockers and racks at all train stations and bus interchanges.
  • Building publicly available cycle hubs in the city of Adelaide, and Mount Barker
