The Greens are calling on the Malinauskas Government to commit to a redress scheme for South Australian mothers subjected to forced adoption practices, following moves in Tasmania and Victoria.
“Just this week, we have seen Tasmania following the lead of the Victorian Government in setting up a redress scheme so that women subjected to forced adoption practices can finally seek justice and compensation. It’s time for the South Australian Government to also show leadership in this area,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.
“We know that forced adoption practices occurred in South Australia up until the late 1970s. The trauma experienced by these women was profound and the consequences are life-long. The State Government provided a formal apology back in 2012 and that was a really welcome move, but now is the time to match that with action. Many of the women impacted by these practices are now in their 70s and 80s and have been dealing with this for decades, they deserve justice.”
“The Malinauskas Government should now commit to establishing a state-based redress scheme and consult with those impacted to determine what that looks like.”
