The Greens are calling on the State Government to make public transport free and implement pop-up bike lanes to cut transport costs for South Australians as the energy crisis grows.
The Greens’ push comes after Premier Malinauskas announced this morning that the State Government would fast-track reforms which would see heavier trucks introduced across SA roads to reduce fuel costs.
“Labor announcement that it will put bigger trucks on SA’s roads falls well short of what’s needed. Making public transport free is a simple, practical move that would cut costs for families and take pressure off fuel supplies and prices,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.
“Tasmania and Victoria have already announced that they are waiving public transport fares to protect people from soaring fuel costs, and the Malinauskas Government should get on board to provide South Australians with the cost-of-living relief they urgently need,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.
“The State Government should also offer pop-up bikeways in the CBD and inner suburbs to give people a cheaper alternative to driving.”
According to the latest Adelaide Metro data, in the week after Adelaide Fringe, there was a six per cent increase in people tapping on to buses, trains and trams compared to the same period last year.
