Government must respond to claims that algal bloom investigation was stalled

7 January 2026

The Greens are calling for the Malinuaskas Government to respond to claims made before today’s hearing of the State Parliamentary Inquiry into the Algal Bloom that Government staff were told not to investigate the causes of the disaster until after the March state election.

Ecologist, Faith Coleman advised the committee earlier today that she had heard the claims from three separate staff across multiple Government agencies.

“These allegations are deeply concerning. The Malinuaskas Government must investigate these claims and assure the South Australian community that they have not sought to stymie any investigations into the causes of this bloom in any way,’ said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“We are just months out from the state election. The community deserves to get to the bottom of what has caused this algal bloom disaster and public servants must be free to provide frank and fearless advice without fear of retribution.”

“The suggestion that any public servant would be told to stall an investigation in order to protect the political interests of the Government is shocking. The Government must respond and rule out any such interference.”
