Government must prevent planning disaster in Dry Creek – Greens

3 December 2024

The Greens SA have welcomed news that more housing is on the horizon for Dry Creek but say that the Government must ensure the area is properly planned to prevent another ‘Mount Barker style’ planning disaster.

“While we welcome more housing coming down the line, the devil will of course be in the detail here,” said Greens Housing Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“The Government will need to ensure the development is planned appropriately and serviced by key infrastructure like public transport to prevent a Mount Barker 2.0 scenario. Naturally, before any project of this scale gets the green light the community will need to be assured that any development is able to withstand the risk of flood and storm.”

“15 per cent affordable housing is welcome, but really the government should be doubling that to 30 per cent – with a strong public housing build too. We’re in a housing crisis, delivering more affordable and social housing is key.”

“Additionally, if AUKUS goes ahead this development will potentially be just around the corner from a nuclear waste dump. I think lots of South Australians will be concerned about that. Once again, the Government needs to think carefully about how this new development interacts with its nuclear industry plans – particularly near key water courses.”
