Fuel up, fares up: Greens urge free public transport

21 September 2026

With petrol prices rising and Adelaide Metro fares set to increase from 1 October, the Greens are urging the Malinauskas Government to back six months of free public transport.

For South Australians already under cost-of-living pressure, rising fuel and public transport costs are a double hit to the household budget.

SA Greens leader Robert Simms has legislation before Parliament that would make buses, trains and trams free for six months.

Quotes attributable to Robert Simms MLC:

“Petrol prices are going up. Public transport fares are going up. South Australians are getting squeezed from both sides, and Labor has a chance to do something about it.”

“This Bill would make public transport free for six months, putting money back in people’s pockets and giving South Australians a genuine alternative to the bowser.”

“We’re just days away from another public transport fare hike. The Malinauskas Government should back this Bill and give South Australians a break.”
