Festival tragedy highlights the need for pill testing

8 January 2024

The Greens are calling for the State Government to make pill testing available at upcoming music festivals following news that eight people are in a critical condition after overdosing on a bad batch of MDMA circulating at a Melbourne music festival.

“This latest tragic event unfolding in Melbourne highlights the risks that remain when pill testing is not available,” said Greens SA Health Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“In 2019 Canberra’s Groovin’ the Moo hosted pop up pill testing trials which identified lethal substances that were disposed of.”

“It’s a shame that the South Australian Government isn’t showing the same leadership as the ACT Government. Pop up pill testing should be trialled at SA music festivals over the summer. Analysing and testing drugs on site in this way will save many lives.”
