Crossbenchers to blame for lack of oversight over hydrogen folly

22 October 2025

The Greens say South Australians have paid a high price for Parliament’s failure to scrutinise Labor’s hydrogen plan back in 2023, when then crossbenchers Frank Pangallo, Sarah Game, and Connie Bonaros killed off the push for a parliamentary inquiry into the legislation.

“Back in 2023 the Greens raised serious concerns about the legislation that enabled Labor’s hydrogen plan. These concerns related to environmental credentials of the proposal and whether or not the significant investment would deliver outcomes for the environment and consumers. I moved to refer the matter onto a select committee. This would have ensured we got all of the facts on the table,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“Sadly, Frank Pangallo, Sarah Game, and Connie Bonaros defeated the push and the legislation got the green light from the Upper House, without the due diligence of a parliamentary inquiry. Fast forward two years and the plan has really unravelled and been exposed as a costly folly for the Government.”

“Mr Pangallo has since joined the Liberal Party, Ms Game has now founded her own political project, and Ms Bonaros is the flagbearer for SA-Best. This raises serious questions about the Liberals, ‘Fair Go’s’, and SA-Best’s capacity to effectively scrutinise Government legislation. It’s a real reminder of the importance of having the Greens on the crossbench because we really do our homework.”
