South Australians deserve cheaper fares and better public transport.
The average South Australian household is spending over $450 per week on transport, including almost $100 on fuel alone.
Meanwhile, we have some of the most expensive public transport in the country and our roads are choked with traffic – causing increased commute times and more carbon pollution.
50 cent fares are proven to work, popular, and ready to go. A 6 month trial in Queensland saw a massive 18% jump in the number of people taking public transport compared and collectively saved regular commuters millions of dollars. It was so successful that both the Labor and Liberal have committed to making 50c cent fares permanent.
If it’s good enough for both major parties in Queensland surely it’s good enough for South Australia too. In April, the Upper House backed my motion calling on the State Government to undertake a trial of 50 cent fares in the 2026 State Budget and Adelaide City Council has also passed a resolution calling on the Government to adopt the plan.
The Greens estimate a family of four that uses public transport every weekday here in SA could save more than $1,700 under a similar 6 month trial. That would be a huge relief for families that are doing it tough during this cost of living crisis.
With both the Upper House and the Adelaide City Council now on board with a trial, momentum is building to slash fares. Sign the petition and email the Treasurer to tell him to include a 6 month trial of 50c fares in the upcoming state budget.
