Almost 170 South Australians have died while waiting for public and community housing over the last 4 years, according to FOI data released to the Greens.
The data from the SA Housing Trust reveals that 169 South Australians have died over the last 4 years, 104 of those had been waiting for more than 2 years and 41 of those who died were on the Category 1 list for high priority housing.
"These figures are heartbreaking. No South Australian should die waiting for a home," said Greens Housing Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.
"Sadly, these figures may not even reveal the full extent of this tragedy as many deaths of people on the housing wait list as simply not reported."
"Surely we can do better than this in South Australia? It's shameful that we have people in our state dying on the housing wait list."
"Housing is a fundamental human right. The State Government must step up and build the public housing we need to get this crisis under control."
