SA Labor ‘doesn’t hold a hose” as toxic algae climate crisis worsens, amid calls for Inquiry: Greens

7 July 2025

The SA Greens have accused the Malinauskas Government of “not holding a hose” as the toxic Algae climate crisis deepens, calling for a State Parliamentary Inquiry and an end to fossil fuel subsidies.

SA Greens are calling for action on toxic alae climate crisis:

  1. Scrap fossil fuel subsidies make gas companies pay for the clean-up and compensation to impacted businesses & industries
  2. Parliamentary Inquiry into State Government response to toxic algae crisis through Environment Resources & Development Committee
  3. Moratorium on new oil and gas in SA – immediately close new exploration tenders for the Otway and Polda basins

Robert Simms is a Greens MLC:

“It’s not good enough for SA Labor to claim they “don’t hold a hose” while the toxic algae climate crisis gets worse. SA needs action, not excuses.”

“Labor needs to end taxpayer subsidies for fossil fuels instead of inviting gas companies to ‘drill baby drill’ while we pick up the bill.”

“The gas companies who created this crisis should pay for the clean up and compensation for the coastal businesses.”

“Labor should immediately commit to a moratorium on new gas and fossil fuel mines in SA which fuel toxic algae and the climate crisis, including in the Otway and Polda basins.”

“We need a Parliamentary Inquiry into the State Government’s response.”

Melanie Selwood is lead Greens candidate for the State election:

“Tom Koutsantonis and Susan Close must immediately cancel their scheme to ‘drill baby drill’ in the Otway and Polda Basins. Close those tenders now and commit to eliminating all taxpayer subsidies for fossil fuels in SA.”

“The Government concedes this is a climate-driven toxic disaster, but they are throwing more gas and petrol on the fire.”

“Our environment, economy and the Greens require action, not excuses.”
