SA Greens call for Parliament to freeze rents and back Rent Control Bill as Adelaide prices soar

6 October 2022

The SA Greens are calling for State Parliament to back their rent control bill as new data reveals prices in Adelaide increased dramatically in September.

According to PropTrack data released this morning, rent prices for houses in Adelaide increased 4.3 (and 2.6 per cent for units) in the September quarter. Adelaide saw the highest increase in house rental prices of any capital city in the country. PropTrack reports house rental prices have increased in the city by 12.9 per cent this year*.

“House prices in Adelaide continue to surge out of control. Many South Australians will be alarmed to see that rent prices in Adelaide are now increasing at a faster rate than any other capital city in Australia. This comes down to a failure of leadership from Government,” said Greens Housing Spokesperson, Robert Simms MLC.

“With more and more people struggling with the increased cost of living, rent spikes like this can hit hard. It’s time for the parliament to step in and back rent controls to stop prices from increasing further. My Private Members Bill provides a clear pathway for the Malinauskas Government to get the rental market under control. As an immediate short-term measure, they should initiate a rent freeze to help cool prices and give renters some relief.”

In July, Mr Simms introduced a Private Members Bill to cap rent prices in line with inflation and restrict them to once in a 24-month period.

Last night Mr Simms held a public meeting in West Torrens to hear the views and experiences of renters. He intends to share the feedback with the Government.
