Greens welcome Labor backing their portable bonds policy - urge them to go further

24 February 2026

The Greens have welcomed the State Government’s announcement today of a portable rental bond scheme but say that Labor needs to go further to give renters a fair go.

"Last year when I moved to amend rental laws to provide for portable bonds, Labor didn't support it. Now in the middle of an election campaign, they've announced our policy as their own," said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

"We welcome Labor copying our policy, but they need to go the whole way. Portable bonds aren't enough, renters need rent caps, minimum energy efficiency standards and a commissioner to stand up for their rights."

"This election, we've seen both Labor and the Libs copy our policies. The Libs with 50c public transport fares and now Labor with portable bonds. This demonstrates the power of the Greens as imitation is the greatest form of flattery."
