The Greens are calling on the State Government to investigate establishing a public builder to fast-track maintenance on public homes after the Advertiser today revealed that private contractors are failing to deliver services and pay tradies for essential repairs.
“During this housing crisis, we can’t leave the responsibility of maintaining public housing to underperforming private contracting firms. It’s completely unacceptable that huge maintenance backlogs are preventing families facing homelessness from accessing public housing and that tradies are being left out of pocket,” said Greens Housing Spokesperson Robert Simms MLC.
“A new public builder could step up and complete necessary maintenance work as an urgent priority. It could also undertake the construction of new public and affordable homes that we desperately need to address the housing crisis.”
Last October Mr Simms moved a motion in the Upper House calling for the State Government to investigate establishing a public builder.
