Greens call for major parties to back minimum rental standards as summer temperatures soar

28 January 2026

The Greens are calling for the Labor and Liberal parties to commit to backing minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties when parliament returns after the state election, as many renters battle soaring temperatures during this heatwave.

Key details:

  • In 2024, the Greens introduced the Residential Tenancies (Minimum Standards) Tenancy Billwhich would set standards on rental properties, including the requirement that rental homes have flyscreens, be fitted with an efficient heater and cooler that is fixed and in good working order, and for landlords to disclose the energy efficiency of their home to potential tenants.
  • The bill was referred to a Select Committee and although an overwhelming number of submissions to the inquiry were in support of the bill, the Labor and Liberal dominated Committee recommended in October 2025 that the bill not proceed.

“Too many renters are sweltering through this summer in hot, stuffy houses with poor insulation, while energy bills and rents soar. if you’re renting in SA, you should have the assurance that your home will be cool in summer with air conditioning that actually works,” said Greens MLC Robert Simms.

“Basic measures, like installing efficient heating and cooling, should be standard practice for landlords. Unfortunately, some landlords are neglecting these essentials while raising rents and raking in profits.”

“With SA baking in this heatwave, it’s time for the major parties to commit to finally bring rental standards in line with community expectations. When Parliament returns, I intend to reintroduce my bill and I urge the major parties to finally get on board. All South Australians deserve to live in healthy homes. This common-sense reform would reduce temperatures in rental properties, along with energy bills.”
